Why are X-Rays the best technology for food inspection?

There are several technologies that can be applied in food inspection, but x-rays are the best.

X-rays are the best in terms of performance and foreign body detection.

All the inspection technologies

Nowadays, companies in food production and processing lines have systems in place to detect non-conformities and contamination by foreign bodies. To ensure that food that has reached the end of the line and is ready to be sold complies with quality and safety standards, it is necessary to have inspection systems capable of detecting such contaminants.

These systems can be based on different technologies: Metal detectors, Infrared, UV and X-ray.

All these technologies have their pros and cons as we shall see.

Limitations of current technologies

However, these inspection systems alone cannot offer the highest degree of safety and quality of the food they inspect.

Metal detectors are efficient in detecting metal foreign bodies, both magnetic and not but fail to detect metals when the product is enclosed in a metal container; not always effective in identifying steel, as the carbon composition influences the metal resistivity;

The Infrared and the UV have very high accuracy on physical-chemical properties of samples inspected but on the other hand can identify contaminants located only within the superficial layers, due to the low penetration ability provided by the electromagnetic radiation energy.

And finally, the X-rays, thanks to the higher radiation energy, can penetrate deeply into materials detecting defects even if placed in a metal or glass container.

We also talked about the safety of x-rays inspections for food, there are no risks related to the radioactivity. They are completely safe.

XSpectra and the limits of traditional x-rays

Even X-rays have limits to the contaminants that can be detected because X-rays are not sensitive to low density foreign bodies and do not perform chemical analysis of the products but only physical properties.

So what is the main solution to overcome all those limitations? XSpectra.

Xnext developed the most performant x-rays inspection technology capable of overcoming all the shortcomings of all the others technologies.

XSpectra can detect high and also low-density foreign bodies directly in line in real-time regardless of the position of the product in the package or the material composition of the package itself.

XSpectra in a few milliseconds can perform a chemical-physical analysis of the product on the conveyor belt that makes XSpectra the best inspection system for recycling materials.

XSpectra is capable of performing multispectral X-ray analysis up to 1024 energy levels, thus obtaining more information and data on the composition of products.
